Do you use the word walkies with your puppy? Is the only time you get the lead out when you are about to take your puppy out for a walk? And does your puppy get over excited and scramble to get out for a walk?
The word walkies is banned in our household for that very reason.
If you would like to have dogs that calmly leave the house at your pace and when you are ready, if you want dogs that are a pleasure to get ready for their walks, then here are a you few tips for how to train them as pups:
1) Don’t give them a specific word that means they are going for a walk. If you need to get your puppy ready for a walk use your recall, sit and wait commands instead. These are general purpose commands that don’t necessarily mean you are going for a walk.
2) Make sure the lead doesn’t also scream walkies. If the only time you grab the lead, put their collar on or put them in their harness is as you are about to leave then this screams walkies as loud as shouting it at the top of your lungs.
3) Train some doorway etiquette in to your puppies. If they pull and strain to rush out of the door before you then you need to train them so its clear that you get to enter and exit before them and that they need to wait for you.
Follow these simple tips and it will make your walks less frantic and less rushed during national dog walking month. If you would like more information on how to train for the above just send me a message.
