Puppy Training: Preparing for your New Family Member

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting and heart-warming experience that can fill your life with joy and laughter. However, it also requires careful preparation to ensure a smooth transition for your little bundle of fur. At Chippy Puppy Classes, we understand the importance of making this momentous occasion a delightful one for both you and your newest family member. So, before the paws patter into your home, let's explore the essential steps to prepare for your puppy's arrival!

Paws-itively Puppy-Proof Your Home: Just like human babies, puppies are naturally curious and love to explore their surroundings. Before your new furry friend arrives, take some time to puppy-proof your home. Get down on all fours (yes, really!) to see things from their perspective and identify potential hazards. Recognise potential problems like electrical cords, move toxic plants out of reach, and stash away any small items that could be swallowed. Remember, a safe environment is a happy environment for your puppy!

Puppy's Private Quarters: Every puppy needs a cosy, comfortable space to call their own. Create a designated puppy zone depending on your preferences you can either find a location for a crate if you would like to crate train your puppy (more on this in our next blog) or alternatively put a soft, washable bed, some toys for entertainment, and fresh water in a specific part of the house that you would like the puppy to use. Introduce them to this area gradually so they can feel secure and develop a sense of ownership. Be sure to place their bed away from drafts and high-traffic areas to provide a calm and quiet retreat.

Fetch the Essentials: Before your puppy's arrival, stock up on the essential puppy supplies. This includes nutritious puppy food (most good breeders will tell you what the puppy has been weaned on and may even send you home with an initial supply we recommend sticking with this food initially), stainless steel food and water bowls, a collar with an identification tag, a leash, grooming tools, and of course, some puppy-friendly toys.

Puppy-Proof Your Heart: Bringing home a new puppy is a commitment that will last for many years to come. Take some time to mentally prepare yourself for the responsibility and love that comes with having a new pet. Owning a puppy can be challenging at times, but the rewards of unconditional love and companionship are immeasurable. Embrace the journey, and your puppy will reward you with boundless affection.

Create a Schedule: Puppies thrive on routine, so start establishing a daily schedule from the beginning. Set regular times for meals, toilet breaks, playtime, and training sessions and importantly lots of rest! Consistency is key to helping your puppy learn and adapt to their new environment. Gradually, they will understand what to expect and become more confident in their new surroundings.

Pre-Puppy Vet Check: A visit to the vet is crucial when your puppy comes home. Ensure they receive a thorough health check, vaccinations, and are protected against common parasites like fleas and ticks. Your vet will also guide you on proper nutrition and answer any questions you may have about your new furry family member's well-being.

Preparing for the arrival of your new puppy is an exciting time filled with anticipation and love. By puppy-proofing your home, creating a safe and comfortable space, and establishing a routine, you can set your puppy up for a smooth transition into their new life with you. Remember, being a pet owner comes with both challenges and rewards, but the bond you'll form with your puppy will make every step of the journey worthwhile. At Chippy Puppy Classes, we're thrilled to help you welcome your fur-ever friend home and help with socialisation and training. We can't wait to be part of your puppy's happy tale!
