The Realities of Puppy Training: Blood, Sweat, and Tears

The realities of puppy training

One of the things I always tell clients at Chippy Puppy Classes is that there will be bad days and good as you train your puppy to be the companion you want.

I know training my own dogs there are often tears of both frustration and joy as your puppy grows and develops. One day you think you have nailed recall next day your puppy seems to have gone profoundly deaf.

The thing I always try to remember is that as long as you put the effort in then you will get rewarded in the end. It all just takes time.

But in order to keep those tears of frustration to a minimum and deal with the realities of puppy training here are a few top training tips:

1) Keep training sessions short – a long training session isn’t good for you or the puppy

2) Try and train multiple times a day – if you are keeping sessions short you can always find five minutes to do a little bit more

3) Always end on a high note – try and set your puppy up for success and when they have done something well take the win and leave it there

4) Don’t take it personally – your puppy isn’t out to thwart you at any point. It just doesn’t always know what you want

5) Keep it fresh – always mix up training exercises to keep both you and your puppy on your toes

With the five tips above you can make training for you and your new puppy enjoyable for all. And hopefully there will be more tears of joy than frustration!
